According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Michale Monokpo, 49, of Columbus was seriously injured in a motor vehicle crash on January 20th. Reports show that Monokpo was stopped on I 71 near Greenlawn Ave. because his vehicle had broken down. Monokpo was attempting to repair the vehicle when it was struck from behind by a commercial truck. The Patrol reports that Monopo was parked partially on the roadway.
Travis Wilhelm 44, of Blacklick was operating the truck, which is owned by Superior Plus Energy Services, Inc., of Troy Ohio. Monokpo was seriously injured in the crash and was transported to Grant Hospital for treatment. Wilhelm was not injured.
According the US Department of Transportation, there were over 168,000 collision involving large trucks in the US in 2023. Over 4,900 people were killed in these crashes and in excess of 71, 000 people sustained injury.
In Ohio in 2023, 150 motorists or pedestrians were killed in wrecks involving large trucks. The major factors leading to truck crashes are an increased demand for goods delivered by trucks, distracted driving, pressure to deliver loads on time, and drug and alcohol use by truck drivers and motorists.
