FOSTORIA MAN KILLED IN HANCOCK COUNTY CRASH

The Findlay Police report that a Fostoria man was killed in a motor vehicle crash on January 31. Clarence Bethel, 45, of Fostoria was travelling westbound on W. Trenton Ave. While stopped near the I-75 northbound entrance, his vehicle was struck in the rear by Kalid Abukar, 40, of Lansing, Michigan. The Bethel vehicle then struck a third vehicle. Police report that unsafe speed by Abukar was the cause of the collision.

Mr. Bethel died at the scene. Abukar was transported by EMS to Blanchard Valley Hospital for treatment of serious injury. The driver of the third vehicle, Eric Stuber, 40, of Leipsic sustained possible minor injury and was treated at the scene.

According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, there were 1,862,225 motor vehicle crashes in Ohio in 2023 resulting in 1,242 fatalities. Over half of the fatal collisions involved impaired driving. Speed was the second leading cause of fatal crashes, which contributed to 29% of all fatalities. Franklin County suffered the most fatalities, with Cuyahoga County and Montgomery having the second and third most fatalities.

The Patrol also reports that 6,150 suffered serious injury due to crashes on Ohio roadways in 2022. The Patrol defines serious injury as an injury that requires medical attention and or hospitalization.
